Advice on Emergency Beer Bottle Openers

By cmubag On November 23, 2009 No Comments

There’s nothing better than a cold chilled larger on a hot day or a nice chilled one to wash down a curry.  Many people also seem to prefer lagers and bottled beers rather than wines with their Christmas dinner.Easy to use beer bottle openers are naturally vital to gaining access to the chilled liquid within and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

There’s the simple classic bottle opener that resembles a key and in some senses it is a key to the golden goodness inside.  These range from the pared down cap poppers on a Swiss Army Knife to heavy duty jobs with solid Sterling Silver rod handles.Cast metal openers might do the job for a while, but don’t underestimate the sheer force required to pop a bottle cap.  Cheaper ones tend to go to pieces after a while.

More sophisticated versions include CellarDine’s ZapCap, which isn’t the most compact unit in the world, but is certainly effective.  It even has a magnet which holds the removed caps in place for neat disposal. You simply place it over the neck of a bottle and with just a gentle push removes the cap with a minimum of effort and fuss.   ZapCap works on metal pop off and twist off caps and is a must have gadget for Christmas, along with the appropriate glassware for the lager of your choice.

But what if you are stuck without any of these excellent bottle openers?   How can you gain access to that well deserved brew?Obvious tip is, buy a beer bottle opener and don’t lose it!  Keep one handy at all times by the wine rack – in fact buy a wine rack just so you can keep a bottle opener next to it!   In extremis however, try these emergency options that use everyday objects to crack off that bottle cap without breaking glass or ruining your expensive dental work (they should work with pop off caps, but twist off caps will probably need a bottle opener or brute force and pliers).

So long as you are not a “yoof” who walks around with the jeans at half mast, your belt’s buckle can function as a bottle opener.  Take off your belt first though. You don’t want to try any sudden motions with glass in that area of your body.f you have a plastic lighter, prop the bottom of it (not the metal top) against the cap’s edge.Push up on the cap with the edge of the lighter. This should loosen it, if not completely pop it off. If you have keys, use one that can wedge between the cap and the bottle’s neck.  Twist the key under the cap and repeat the process until you get halfway around the cap. You should be able to simply grip the cap with your fingers and thumb and twist it off, although you may never be able to get in your front door again.

Uses Of A Wine Rack

By cmubag On July 8, 2009 No Comments

Wine is a drink that is made from grapes, basically. There are a lot of other wines which are also made from other fruits and plants but grapes are the most common contributors to wine than any other fruit. Wine is stored in wine bottles which are also stored in a wine rack. A wine rack is sort of like a shelf for wine bottles. The main purpose of these storage units are to really hold the wine bottles in which wine is stored.

The Shape Of A Wine Rack

A basic wine rack is shaped or designed like a book shelf only the shelves are tilted upwards at the back of each shelf. At the front part of each shelf, there is supposed to be a stopper or a contraption that is supposed to support the wine bottle and prevent it from slipping forward. The wine bottles are stored in the wine rack almost upside down or at an angle as long as the cork in rack bottle is immersed in the liquid. Some people also store the wine bottle lying on the side; any angle is permissible as long as the cork is immersed in liquid. The reason behind this angle is to keep the cork immersed in the liquid to prevent it from drying up and eventually falling into the wine if it is stored standing right side up.

There are many variations to a wine rack design which may suit any home owner or individual’s preferences. The design mentioned above is the most basic design for a rack and it is made of wood. There are also some racks which are made with iron or plastic or any other medium that can effectively hold a wine bottle and stop it. A wine rack made with wrought iron is appealing to some people and this can be quite attractive especially the wine rack that can be placed on top of the counter or the table at the house.

Some wine racks are designed to hold wine glasses for the convenience of the owner. Wine glass holders also come in different designs. There is even a hanging wine glass rack where the glasses can be store hanging upside down. Needs of the individual or the home owner decides what would be the size of the wine rack. If the owner is a connoisseur of wine, then he or she might like to have a bigger wine rack in which to store many bottles of wine.

By cmubag On April 15, 2009 No Comments

For some people, an unfinished wood wine rack may have the country charm that they were looking for and they could prefer it. Many people start a project and then forget how they envisioned it from the very beginning. Wine racks are relatively easy to make and most wine rack plans are also quite easy to follow.

However, if you have started building a rack and have run out of steam before finishing, you may well be left with an unfinished wood wine rack. If this is where you’re at, keep reading – there are a few things you can do to finish up this simple project.

Alternative Finishes For The Unfinished Wood Wine Rack

If you’re not one who wants a totally unfinished wood wine rack, then you’ll want to add a little more work to enhance its look. You can do several different things to make your wine rack look great. Of course, there’s no problem with using your unfinished wood wine rack as it currently is, but with a little extra work, you can make it look truly great. Adding paint or veneer can make a huge difference.

Choosing the finish for your unfinished wood wine rack can be difficult if you have many preferences. The best that you can do, if you are determined to finish the wine rack is to base the finish on the room where the wine rack is most likely to be placed. If the kitchen or dining room is basically a less formal room, the unfinished wood wine rack can be painted whatever color you think will blend well or complement the room.

An alternative to painting your unfinished wood wine rack is to either tint it or coat it with varnish. Tinting has many shades to choose from and so does varnish. It would be a good idea to correspond the tint or varnish according to the room where you plan to put the wine rack. If you do not have any particular room in mind yet, then tint or varnish the unfinished wood wine rack according to your preference.

You could also choose to buff and sand your unfinished wood wine rack to a smooth finish rather than painting or varnishing the rack. This is a good choice for wine racks made of wood with an attractive grain pattern. Painting this wood will only obscure the grain; varnishing or tinting will cover up the color of the wood. Choosing to sand and buff your unfinished wooden wine rack will display the natural qualities of the wood to their best advantage.

If you’re wondering what to do with that unfinished wood wine rack you’ve been working on, these are all possibilities. However, there are many others, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your wine rack.
